About Us
Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences was established in the year 1980 by the Vokkaligara Sangha and is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore, Karnataka.
The Vokkaligara Sangha took a formal decision on 2.9.1979 to start a medical college from the year 1980-81 and applied for permission to the Registrar, Bangalore University.
On 30.11.1980 the Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri. R Gundu Rao laid the foundation stone of the Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences and Hospital in the premises of the Sangha and announced the grant of vacant land in Banashankari to be used for the construction of college building and hostels. Thereafter, the Sangha appointed Dr M Basavaraju, Professor of Physiology as the principal on 1.1.1981 and other staff by March 1981 and classes were started regularly from the 16th of March 1981. Since then 16th March is observed every year as KIMS Day. The Silver Jubilee Celebrations of the Institute was held in the year 2006.
A Magnificent college building to mark the centenary celebrations of the Vokkaligara Sangha and the Silver Jubilee of KIMS has been built at the Banashankari Campus.

The emblem of KIMS consists of a central wand with entwined snakes symbolizing the Greek and Roman Gods of Health called Hermis & Mercury, a symbol of modern medical science.  The tower at the top depicts one of the four towers erected by Sri. Magadi Kempegowda, the founder of Bangalore city who had erected these towers in all four directions to mark the boundaries of the city of Bangalore which still exists as tourist spots, though the city has grown beyond these limits.  The motto SATHATHA SEVA THATHPARATHEinscripted in Kannada language proclaims the goal in the life of every KIMS graduate meaning “Always devoted to the service”.
Objectives of the Institution:
  • Impart training to medical students to becompetent in the management of health problems of the individual and the community, commensurate with his/her position as a member of the society and familiarize with the national health programmes.
  • Develop his/her personal characteristics and attitude required for professional life such as personal integrity, sense of responsibility, dependability and ability to relate to or show concern for other individuals.
  • Enable him/her to work as a leading partner in health care teams, gear up to mobilize resources to meet the health  needs of natural calamities  when required.
  • Enable him/her to acquire proficiency in communication skills to appreciate social, psychological, cultural, economic and environmental factors affecting health and to develop human attitude towards discharging ones professional responsibility.
  • Develop attitudes for continued self learning and seek further expertise or to pursue research in any chosen area of medicine
KIMS is recognized by the Medical Council of India permanently for running of MBBS Course since 1980-81 and also running Post-graduate degree/diploma courses since 1991-92 and these courses are also recognized by Government of India.

KIMS is located in two sections:-
  • Pre-clinical and Para Clinical departments are Located at Banashankari IInd Stage near BDA complex, Bangalore-560070.
  • Clinical departments and KIMS Hospital are located at the KIMS Hospital K.R Road, V.V Puram, Bangalore-560004, 4kms from the College campus.

UNDERGRADUATION
M.B.B.S Course
The College is affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka and is recognised by the Medical Council of india. The M.B.B.S Course is governed by the regulations of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka. The duration of the course is four and half years (9 terms, each of 6 month duration) of academic Study and one year of internship.
Under these regulations, the entire course is divided into 3 phases. Candidates are admitted to the Pre-Clinical Phase(Phase-I) of one year duration (2 terms) during which they study the subjects of Anatomy, Physiology & Biochemistry. At the end of Phase-1, they appear for the M.B.B.S Phase-I examination of the University. After successfully completing the Pre-Clinical course, the students enter the Para-Clinical Phase (Phase-II) of one & a half year duration(3 terms), during which they mainly study Microbiology, Pharmacology, Pathology & Forensic Medicine. During this period, the students also learn some part of the clinical subjects. They appear for the Phase-II university examinations at the end of the one and a half years. If successful, the students enter Phase-III which is of two years duration having clinical subjects as part of the study. At the end of one year (2 terms), the student take the Phase-III(Part-1) examinations comprising of the subjects E.N.T, Ophthalmology & Community Medicine. At the end of the next one year (the last 2 terms), the student answers the Phase-III (Part-2) examinations comprising of the subjects Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics & Orthopaedics.
Clinical training in the Hospitals attached to the Institute will commence as soon as the student successfully completes Phase-I & will continue throughout Phase-II & Phase-III of the course.

HEALTH TRAINING
The Urban Health Training Centre (UHTC) is located at Parvathipura behind KIMS Hospital. Besides, the Pobbathi Maternity Home of Bangalore City Corporation is also used as an UHTC.
The three primary health centres viz., Konanakunte, K.Gollahalli and Kengeri satellite town PHC’s are attached to the Institute. The institute has a Rural health Training Centre (RHTC) at Kengeri about 12kms from Bangalore. There are facilities for Interns to stay in the Training Centre for the training programme under the Department of Community Medicine. There are two sub centres of RHTC at Mylsandra and Varahasandra respectively run in collaboration with BHEL, Govt of Karnataka. Health training facilities are also provided at the Epidemic Diseases Hospital, Old Madras Road.
